Sensory and Motor Developmental Delay

All babies and children develop at different rates. Babies develop more in their first year of life than the next ten. There is a wide range of normative development and some children develop quicker in some areas than others. Developmental delays (DD) are common in childhood, can be mild, moderate, or severe and can be caused by a range of factors. The term ‘developmental delay’ or ‘global development delay’ is used when a child takes longer to reach certain developmental milestones than other children their age. This might include their learning and development of communication, socialisation, play, sensory processing, modulation and integration, visual and motor skills.

What matters most is how your baby progresses through each developmental stage, rather than simply reaching the stage itself. It’s concerning if a baby is placed in sitting or standing positions without the ability to get into or out of these positions independently or move around on the floor. While most babies do catch up over time, we’re here to offer support and guidance to help your baby advance to their next developmental stage. For children with mild developmental delays, if there are no red flags or abnormal findings during a clinical examination, we can provide advice on suitable stimulation activities and schedule a follow-up as deemed necessary by the physiotherapist.
